“The Basics of Winning Poker”
Poker is a basic game of cards played by humans, that s the easy part, the hard part is increasing your playing skill to beat and profit from the game. Given that everyone gets two cards and sees the same cards on the board, the fundamental comes down to how each player plays their two hole cards. The best players in the world all share some common traits, yes they all play a different style, but ultimately they all share the following traits.
Aggression – No I don’t mean that they physically and verbally assault or intimidate the opposition; they play their hole cards and each hand that they are involved in aggressively by betting and raising. By constantly betting and raising then they force their opponent to make a decision about whether to call of fold rather than to see a free card, possibly causing the opponent to make an incorrect decision.
Patience – The best in the world are some of the most patient, waiting for their opportunity to make the correct play, often winning hands due to timing and position rather than holding the best hand. By putting themselves in only the most profitable situations, they are able to maximize their profit.
Vigilant – When at the table profitable players are vigilatiy watching everything, I mean everything, how does each player react when they look at their cards? Who reacts when the flop is dealt? What actions do players make when betting or checking and what were their hole cards? It is vital to be able to observe these things and everything else so that when you are in a hand against them, you have added information about how strong their actual hand is.
Bravado – The decision of whether to call, fold or bluff based on whether you think you have the best hand. The brave players can make the big call with nothing but a high card if all the information tells them that they are in front. The best can push the fear aside if they truly believe they are good no matter what the odds. However, calling when the information tells you otherwise is just donating, not clever.
Education – Like I said, Poker is a basic card game; it does however only take a short time on the table to learn but can literally take your entire life to become a master of it. The good news is that it is possible and by reading articles, watching Poker DVD’s, listening to audio books you can transform your game and become a profitable player also.
